When Wild Heart Ecojourneys was just starting up, Kevin (Cafarelli) and I were more than excited to show people a different side to the Florida Everglades. The “Wild Heart side” if you will. Little did we know just how different our side of Florida was.

The Western Everglades is a diverse and unique ecosystem: hosting seasonal migrants, purifying Florida’s water, providing much needed habitat for endangered species, and bestowing its human visitors with spectacular moments in nature.

Band-winged Dragonlet (Erythrodiplax umbrata)

Setting forth in the Jeep Wrangler, we weren’t sure what to expect from Picayune Strand State Forest. As we traveled in, the experience of the wilderness began to take over. We heard bird calls instead of bustling cars as we drove along the bumpy road, stopping at every wildlife sighting.Animals and plants galore, from the tiniest flower to a soaring bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus).

After almost two hours in the park, we had driven all of maybe two miles. We had barely scratched the surface, and we knew that this was the beginning of something special. Ecojourneys are not average ecotours…
